One of a Kind

Talbot Lake

Northern Pike icon Northern Pike - Sight Fishing

One of only four lakes in the world with Northern Pike in the mountains. At an average depth of just 4.5 feet, the water is crystal clear - you watch the "slough sharks" charge your fly across the shallows. They hit with bad intentions.

"It gets the hair on the back of your neck standing up, watching a slough shark chasing your fly." - Chris David, Head Guide

Season: May 16 - September 30  |  Lake record: 27 lbs

Spring Fishing

Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake fishes brilliantly in spring - May through mid-June - before the lake trout retreat into deep water for summer. If you're visiting in spring, this is a worthy addition to your Jasper itinerary.

"Pyramid sits right at the edge of town, but it fishes like wilderness. Early season, it's one of the best kept secrets in the park - fish it before mid-June, before the lake trout go deep for summer."

Best Season: May 16 - mid-June  |  Near Jasper townsite

Our Parks Canada licence covers many of Jasper's finest waters: Beaver Lake (brook trout heaven), Cabin Lake (legendary rainbow trout numbers), Medicine Lake (the disappearing lake - expert sight fishing), Moab Lake (native Athabasca strain rainbow), and the Athabasca River (massive spring pike and bull trout).

Guided Sightseeing by Electric Freighter Canoe

You don't need to fish to experience Maligne Lake the way it deserves to be seen. Our 21-foot freighter canoes - with electric motors - are extraordinarily stable platforms for photography, wildlife watching, and reaching Spirit Island.

“The Hall of the Gods.”

— Mary Schäffer Warren, 1908. Explorer and botanist who became the first non-Indigenous person to reach Maligne Lake. When she arrived and saw Spirit Island framed by the peaks, this is what she wrote in her journal. The name has followed the place for over a century.
  • 21-foot freighter canoes - stand up, move around, no tipping worry
  • Electric motors only - quiet, zero emissions, wildlife-friendly
  • 📸Perfect for photography - glassy water, mountain reflections, Spirit Island
  • 🏔️Certified guide included - local knowledge, wildlife spotting, history
  • 👨‍👩‍👧Ideal for families, non-anglers, and anyone who wants the full Jasper experience

None at all. Complete beginners are welcome - your guide will teach you everything you need to know on the water. We also happily accommodate experienced fly anglers who want to cast to specific targets. We tailor every trip to your group.
Dress in layers - Maligne Lake runs a few degrees colder than Jasper townsite, and mountain weather can change quickly. We provide foul weather gear, so you're covered if it turns. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. For footwear, sandals and open-toed shoes are fine on warm days, but closed-toe shoes are recommended in cooler weather. We provide water on all trips and lunch on full-day tours - just bring snacks if you're on a half-day.
There is no cell service at Maligne Lake. We recommend loading your navigation before leaving Jasper townsite - you'll lose signal on Maligne Lake Road. We'll send you the dock location by text or email in advance so you have it saved offline.

All our guided trips are completely private - it's your group and your guide only. We never combine strangers on the same boat.
Spirit Island is one of the most photographed locations in Canada, situated at the far end of Maligne Lake. Explorer Mary Schäffer, who first reached the lake in 1908, called it "the Hall of Gods." It can only be reached by boat - and our 12-hour Spirit Island Expedition guarantees you get there.
Cancellations made 5 or more days before your trip receive a full refund. Cancellations within 5 days of the trip are non-refundable. If we cancel due to weather or unsafe conditions, you always receive a full refund or we rebook you at no additional charge.
Maligne Lake is approximately 1 hour's drive from the Jasper townsite along Maligne Lake Road. We'll send you the exact dock location in advance. Remember to load navigation before you leave town - there's no cell service on Maligne Lake Road.
Our guided fishing trips are ideal for 1-2 guests, which allows everyone to fish with two lines in the water at once. We can accommodate up to 4 guests on current equipment. For larger groups, call us to discuss options.
We specialize in fly fishing, and our guides tie their own custom flies. We use several fly fishing techniques depending on the lake and conditions: indicator (chironomid) fishing, trolling with flies, casting, and dry fly. No previous fly fishing experience is necessary - we'll teach you on the water.
