In 1908, explorer Mary Schäfer became the first non-Indigenous person to reach Maligne Lake. She experienced it the way we still do today - from the water. She called what she found at the far end of the lake "the Hall of the Gods" - a place of such dramatic beauty that words failed her.

Today, most visitors to Maligne Lake see Spirit Island from a viewing platform, snap a photo, and turn back. But Mary Schäfer didn't stop at Spirit Island - and neither do we.

Spirit Island & Beyond continues past the famous viewpoint into the rarely-visited upper reaches of the lake - first to the Hall of the Gods, and then to a place we call Currie's Island. Many of our guests tell us this hidden spot, with its dramatic mountain backdrop and mirror-still waters, offers an even more stunning photo opportunity than Spirit Island itself.

We view Spirit Island from the water - giving you unobstructed sightlines and classic photography angles. We don't land on the island; we glide past it, then continue beyond to places most visitors never see.
