About Talbot Lake

Talbot Lake is extraordinary. At an average depth of just four and a half feet, the water is crystal clear — you can see the bottom, the weeds, and the fish. Northern Pike thrive here, and this is one of only four mountain pike lakes in all of North America.

Row the edges of the lake, watch pike holding in the weed structure, and cast to your target. Whether you fish or simply take in the scenery, Talbot Lake delivers an experience unlike anything else in Jasper.

The shallow, weedy structure is perfect for sight fishing — your guide or your own instincts will spot fish holding in the vegetation before you cast. You pick the target, make the cast, and watch the whole thing happen in front of you.

What fish are in Talbot Lake?
Talbot Lake is known for Northern Pike — one of the most aggressive freshwater predators. The lake's average depth of just 4.5 feet makes it perfect for sight fishing, where you can watch pike charge your fly from across the shallows. Fish in the 60–90 cm range are common, and larger fish are caught each season.
Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes — a Parks Canada fishing licence is required. This is NOT an Alberta provincial licence. Purchase at the Astoria Hotel (404 Connaught Drive, Jasper) before your trip, or add it at checkout when booking online. Children under 12 fish free; under 16 fish free when with a licensed adult.
Do you offer self-guided boat rentals on Talbot Lake?
Yes — rowboat rentals on Talbot Lake are available through our sister site, jasperboatrentals.ca. This page covers guided fishing only.
Is there cell service at Talbot Lake?
